Early Environmental Education Will Create Future Green Ambassadors

July 12, 2018 | by J. Scott Collard

Individual attitudes and habits are formed at a very early age. This fact accentuates the need to provide environmental education and hands-on experiences to children. We need to give students the environmental knowledge and understanding in order to create the next generation of responsible, environmental stewards. By increasing a student’s knowledge using educational programs concerning recycling, they develop their attitudes and behaviors in a positive way thereby gaining environmental awareness.

In some cases, school children are better informed on critical environmental issues than their parents, and environmental education received by students indirectly influenced their parents in recycling efforts.

Chesterfield, MO Elementary School involves students with a fun recycling and composting program using the GreenDrop Recycling Station, with instructional labels that includes Water Harvesting and a Food Waste and Compostables with daily updates.

The rapidly increasing world population, combined with an escalation in consumption of natural sources, the lack of effective public education, and the unconscious use of our natural resources has become a growing environmental concern. In developed countries it has been identified that there has been a decrease in food waste, yet an increase in packaging waste. These negative effects have caused society to worry about the future of our environment. A number of natural resources have been destroyed for the production of consumables that then become solid wastes. The only possible way to reduce the destruction of our natural resources is by producing less solid waste and increasing recycling.

Awty International School in Houston, Texas is striving to become a zero waste campus. Quite an ambitious goal for a Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade private school. Awty educational program combines high academic standards that celebrates all cultural, national, and linguistic diversity. Preparing it’s graduates to be global citizens who are concerned with contemporary issues and visions for the future.

Olivier Logette, the school’s sustainability coordinator, wants to educate Awty students about issues regarding recycling, up-cycling, and refurbishing daily items used in school activities. Challenging them to think about how small environmental actions can contribute to the greater global good for generations to come.

”Our school already had a recycling program designed for the normal waste streams; paper, plastics, and metals,” Logette stated, “but we realized that what was left out was school related wastes: writing instruments, electronics, ink cartridges and batteries from their school electronics.”

Logette was able to find companies that collect and recycle, upcycle or refurbish those waste stream items, some for a fee, others for free. “We wanted to capture and collect those school related waste items and needed a comprehensive, self-sorting station that accommodated such collections.”

After some research, Atwy chose the GreenDrop Recycling Station from Pacific Cascade Corporation. The unique GreenDrop Recycling Station was developed through the multi-year efforts of the Portland Trail Blazers head office and the Moda Center. The arena’s landfill diversion rate increased from 38% in 2007 to over 90% in 2012, in part by replacing old-style trash cans with GreenDrop Recycling Stations. GreenDrop stations helped reduce landfill contributions by visually showing users how to properly dispose of recyclable items. GreenDrops were a key tool in reducing their venue’s environmental footprint through fiscally responsible, and sustainable operations.

“Everyone here at Awty loves those GreenDrop stations and the fact that our school goes beyond the normal recycling streams. Our students, faculty, and staff find the bins present themselves very well and are very functional,” added Logette.

Generally, GreenDrop Recycling Stations are used in commercial applications and have advertising or branding areas on their front panel. Logette, a biology and geology teacher, came up with a unique opportunity to involve more students in this zero waste project. “I am always trying to extend sustainability in all courses and levels as much as possible. Our Art teachers were very happy to participate when I approached them with the project. Normally, the blank advertising space on the bins are great for marketing, but in a school situation, it doesn’t really make sense. That space gives the art students a permanent exhibition to display their art and help promote our zero waste goal.”

Providing students with environmental awareness will prepare them to become the future champions of our environment, knowledgeable about environmental issues, our limited natural resources, and to be sensitive to nature. That way, subsequent generations can enjoy and care for our environment better than we are doing today.

University of Texas at Austin and Huston-Tillotson University Named Winners of Inaugural College Sports Sustainability Makeover Contest

July 5, 2016 | by J. Scott Collard

Vancouver, WA (July 6, 2016)—On June 30, the University of Texas at Austin and Huston-Tillotson University were announced as the two inaugural winners of the College Sports Sustainability Makeover Contest at the Green Sports Alliance Summit in Houston, TX.

The contest was designed to highlight college athletics’ unique and powerful impact on community sustainability; to influence fans’ sustainability behaviors where they live, work, and play; and to boost college sports’ sustainability capacity.

Contest sponsors GreenDrop Recycling Stations from Pacific Cascade Corporation, Eco-Products, EcoSafe Zero Waste, Max-R, and the University of Colorado Boulder Environmental Center provided prizes and support packages valued at over $50,000 for each winning campus. Contest partners included the Green Sports Alliance and the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education.

“The Makeover Contest was an overwhelming success as proven by the number of high quality submissions and the outstanding leadership of the two winning campuses,” said Scott Jenkins, Chair of the Green Sports Alliance Board of Directors. “College sports has distinguished itself as a sustainability leader capable of using its cultural and market influence to promote healthy, sustainable communities. We all win in that game.”

Presenters and recipients at the Green Sports Alliance Summit; Lyle Peters, Director of Sales for the GreenDrop Stations is far right and Thomas C. Henderson, Head Men’s Basketball Coach, Huston-Tillotson University of Austin, TX, is two before Peters.

The small-campus category winner, Huston-Tillotson University (HTU), a 141-year-old historically black institution, will receive ten new custom recycling and composting stations from GreenDrop Recycling, a supply of compostable foodware and bags, and on-site sustainability assistance from University of Colorado Boulder (UC) technical experts.

HTU has a robust commitment to sustainability, exemplified by the HTU Center for Sustainability and Environmental Justice and HTU’s goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2048. Additionally, HTU has an active student-led group, “Green is the New Black”, which seeks to promote sustainability issues as they impact minority stakeholders, and engage its students in all aspects of sustainability across all of its academic and athletics activities.

“We were honored to be part of this College Sustainability Contest”, stated Lyle Peters, Director of Sales for the GreenDrop Stations at Pacific Cascade. “This program will reward those institutions that promote environmental responsibility and sustainability not only to their students, but influence all campus visitors, while helping to impact an entire community”.

The large-campus category, the University of Texas at Austin (UT) will receive ten customized waste and recycling bins, a supply of compostable foodware, and on-site assessments from UC sports sustainability staff.

UT-Austin’s implementation of sustainability across many sports keyed its win by showing that even the biggest college athletics programs can implement comprehensive sustainability efforts. UT-Austin aligns athletics’ sustainability goals and actions with those of the campus and the City of Austin. Together, this leadership model demonstrates how a very large, research-intensive university can integrate sustainability across all facets of campus life and leverage the power of college sports to expose many fans to the benefits of sustainability principles and practices.

GreenDrop Recycling Stations join the Pittsburgh Pirates in their “Let’s Go Bucs. Let’s Go Green.” campaign.

June 27, 2016 | by J. Scott Collard

Pittsburgh, PA (June 1, 2016)–The Pittsburgh Pirates have added GreenDrop Stations to their “Let’s Go Bucs. Let’s Go Green.” campaign.  PNC Park and the Pittsburgh Pirates established an environmental sustainability program in 2008 that includes all daily operations.

Pittsburgh-Pirates-GreenDrop-PostThey have now added durable GreenDrop Recycling Stations to support their efforts. ADA-conforming GreenDrop Stations reduce landfill contributions by showing event attendees how to easily self-sort recyclable and/or compostable items out of the landfill waste stream.  The Pirates are reducing their environmental footprint while minimizing staffing expenses and being fiscally responsible through sustainable operations.

“The goal of the ‘Let’s Go Bucs. Let’s Go Green.’ program is to focus on landfill diversion, resource conservation, and educating PNC Park visitors”, stated Sissy Burkhart, the Manager of Cleaning Operations at PNC Park.  “Before this program, there were no set diversion practices so almost all of our waste went to landfills. Today, we are seeing the rewards of our sustainability efforts in supporting our community and involving fans in the process”.

Since the launch of “Let’s Go Bucs. Let’s Go Green.” campaign, the Pirates and PNC Park have recycled more than 6 million pounds of material, and successfully diverted approximately 75% of waste away from the waste stream.  The PNC Park has recycled 78 Million plastic bottles, collected 644 tons of compostable materials in the 2014 season alone, and used environmentally friendly paper including toilet paper that is made of 100% recycled materials.

To further increase their sustainability efforts at PNC Park, the Pittsburgh Pirates have chosen to add GreenDrop Recycling Stations to their Executive offices. GreenDrop Stations have worked in other venues of the Green Sports Alliance of which the Pirates are an active member.

“Using a composting waste stream option can remove tons of organic material normally going to landfills.  That will help slow down the production of methane, a hazardous contributor to greenhouse gas, from entering our atmosphere”, added Burkhart.

The unique, market-leading GreenDrop Recycling Station was developed through the multi-year efforts of the Portland Trail Blazers head office and the Moda Center. The arena’s landfill diversion rate increased from 38% in 2007 to over 90% in 2012, in part by replacing old-style garbage cans with GreenDrop Recycling Stations. GreenDrop stations reduce landfill contributions by visually showing users how to properly dispose of recyclable and compostable items.  GreenDrops are a key tool in reducing a venue’s environmental footprint through fiscally responsible sustainable operations.

Lyle Peters, Director of Sales for the GreenDrop Stations, adds, “The Pirates and PNC Park have been on the forefront of sustainability and environmental education for the past seventeen years. This has been an exciting project for our Pacific Cascade team. We helped with their custom instructional labels depicting specific items to sort and also promote the “Let’s Go Bucs. Let’s Go Green.” campaign. Detailed sorting labels guide guests to quickly and accurately dispose of waste within specific waste streams at one orderly stop.  Keeping facility expenses at a minimum.

2014 AT&T MLS All-Star Game

Portland, OR (September 8, 2014)–Major League Soccer understands the importance of environmental sustainability and is committed to identifying ways to reduce their carbon footprint.  Major League Soccer and the Portland Timbers chose GreenDrop Recycling Stations to help implement their strategic sustainability plans for waste diversion at this year’s 2014 AT&T MLS All-Star Game in Portland, OR, at Providence Park.

Through the MLS WORKS Greener Goals program, the League aims to educate the soccer community about environmental best practices, help make their facilities more environmentally friendly and undertake “green” community initiatives in collaboration with their clubs and in partnership with respected organizations such as the Green Sports Alliance and Natural Resources Defense Council.

“We are very pleased to partner with GreenDrop to provide these convenient and intuitive recycling stations throughout Providence Park for the hundreds of thousands of guests that visit the stadium each season,” said Kristel Wissel, Director of Community Relations for the Timbers. “This program enables our fans to easily self-sort their recyclable and compostable items.  It is a natural extension of our already robust sustainability practices.”

GreenDrop Recycling Stations go to work for Farmer Brothers as they look to a goal of zero landfill-bound waste.

June 4, 2014 | by J. Scott Collard

Pacific Cascade, who markets and sells the GreenDrop Recycling Stations, is pleased to announce that Farmer Bros. Co. (“Farmer Brothers”)  has chosen GreenDrop Stations to handle the diverting of its recyclable and compostable waste from landfills. Farmer Brothers’ ultimate objective is to reach 100% landfill diversion by the year 2015, prolonging the lifecycle of resources while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Farmer_Brothers_Sorting_GreenDrop_Station

The unique, market-leading GreenDrop Recycling Station was designed through multi-year efforts of the Portland Trail Blazers head office and the newly named Moda Center. The arena’s landfill diversion rate increased from 38% in 2007 to over 90% in 2013, in part by replacing old-style garbage cans with GreenDrop Recycling Stations. GreenDrop Recycling Stations reduce landfill contributions by enabling Farmer Brothers employees to easily self-sort recyclable and compostable items. Self-sorting reduces Farmer Brothers environmental footprint while minimizing waste hauling expenses and being fiscally responsible through sustainable operations.

Farmer Brothers took the time to look closely at its operations, discovering ways to increase recycling, repurposing, and composting, and to minimize the environmental impact of its coffees, teas, and spices. “Our goal is to have zero waste bound for landfills by the end of 2015 through smart practices and innovation. We evaluated other containers, but GreenDrop was the best option for our recycling needs,” stated Sarah Beaubien, Director of Sustainability for Farmer Brothers.

In addition to the GreenDrop Recycling Stations diverting the composting and recycling waste streams, Farmer Brothers has developed programs to recycle an estimated 1,500,000 pounds of packaging machine waste from landfills each year. Farmer Brothers receives over 500,000 pounds of fiber bags per year used for shipping green coffee. These bags are now being repurposed for weed control in reclamation projects, tools for local farmers harvesting fruits and vegetables, bag-and-burlap for tree plantings, and much more. Most of these bags were once bound for landfills, but today there is a waiting list to extend the useful life of these bags. Another success has been taking at least 15,000 pounds per month of chaff from their Portland facility left over from coffee processing and selling this material to companies producing natural fertilizers. “The GreenDrop Recycling Station and process innovations developed by our team help us progress toward zero landfill-bound waste and will help us meet our goal by 2015,” said Patrick Mitchell, Director of Operations for Farmer Brothers.

Lyle Peters, Pacific Cascade Corporation’s Director of Sales for the GreenDrop Stations, adds, “We are happy to be included in Farmer Brothers’ impressive goal of zero landfill waste. GreenDrop Recycling Stations are a perfect fit with their innovative programs and the Pacific Cascade team is proud to help them meet their goal.”

“Farmer Brothers is genuinely committed to waste reduction. They are actively working to increase recycling, composting and looking for new opportunities to reduce waste. Waste Management is proud to be partnering with Farmer Brothers, and we look forward to continued success and helping them reach zero landfill waste,” says Trevor Kitchen, Major Account Manager for Waste Management who handles Farmer Brothers’ multiple waste stream hauling.

GreenDrop Recycling Stations are a proven asset when investing in facilities operations and public perception. Contact us to discuss how GreenDrop stations can enhance your recycling/composting/waste diversion program.
