Huskies Going Green: University of Washington Athletic Department Installs GreenDrop Recycling Stations

October 16, 2013 | by J. Scott Collard

Alaska Airlines Arena, Husky Stadium to promote green initiatives at sporting events

Seattle, WA —The University of Washington Athletic Department’s sustainability program has chosen GreenDrop Recycling Stations to help implement their strategic sustainability plans for waste diversion at Alaska Airlines Arena and the newly renovated Husky Stadium.

The Athletic Department’s sustainability committee, better known as the “Green Team,” selected GreenDrop Recycling Stations from Pacific Cascade Corporation as an instrumental part of the recycling and composting program at both venues, where over 730,000 guests attend annually.

Two Husky fans support the University of Washington Athletic Department’s sustainability efforts by self-sorting recyclable and compostable items into one of the 169 GreenDrop Stations deployed at Husky Stadium and Alaska Airlines Arena.

GreenDrop Recycling Stations reduce landfill contributions by users easily self-sorting recyclable and compostable items so are not placed in the landfill waste stream.  Self-sorting reduces the Athletic Department’s environmental footprint while minimizing expenses and being fiscally responsible through sustainable operations.

The UW Athletic Department is a member of the Green Sports Alliance, and was one of the first collegiate organizations to join the Alliance.  “We wanted to continue being on the forefront and enhance our environmental performance,” commented Aubrey Batchelor, Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability Coordinator.  “We’re committed to promote green initiatives at home sporting events.”

“Partnering with GreenDrop allows our Athletic Department to incorporate a convenient waste-diversion system that patrons can easily utilize without increasing operational costs,” explains Carter Henderson, Assistant Athletic Director. “We evaluated other containers, but GreenDrop was the best option for our recycling needs.”

The unique, market-leading GreenDrop Recycling Station was designed through multi-year efforts of the Portland Trail Blazers head office and the newly named Moda Center, formally the Rose Garden Arena.  The arena’s landfill diversion rate increased from 38% in 2007 to 90% in 2011, in part by replacing old-style garbage cans with GreenDrop Recycling Stations. GreenDrop stations reduce landfill contributions by visually guiding users to properly dispose recyclable items.  GreenDrops are a key tool in reducing a venue’s environmental footprint through fiscally responsible sustainable operations.

“We’re seeking LEED Gold Certification and greatly increasing our landfill diversion rates is essential to receive that award,” said Dan Gaston, University of Washington Athletics Assistant Athletic Director, and Event and Operations Manager.

Lyle Peters, Director of Sales for the GreenDrop Stations, adds, “This has been an exciting project for the Pacific Cascade team. UW Athletic Department ordered 169 stations to be deployed at Husky Stadium and the Alaska Airlines Arena. The university designed custom labels to correspond with their brand guidelines and we helped coordinated the process so GreenDrops arrived with labels installed and ready to deploy.”

South Bend, IN – Pacific Cascade Corporation, the producer of the GreenDrop Recycling Station is proud to announce that Elkhart Plastics, Inc. (EPI) recently received a 2012 Product Competition Award for Recycled Product of the Year at the annual meeting of the Association of Rotational Molders for its production of the innovative GreenDrop Recycling Station product. The GreenDrop Recycling Station is a four-compartment, 88-gallon unit made of 100% recycled plastic that allows guests to easily self-sort recyclable and compostable items, keeping them out of the landfill waste stream.

GreenDrop Deluxe Recycling Station“The GreenDrop Recycling Station is a perfect example of our interest in creating custom engineered solutions for our customers’ unique challenges. By utilizing eco-friendly materials to create a product that encourages additional eco-friendly behavior by users, we feel that we are really making an impact on the environment as well as our clients’ bottom line,” said Jack Welter, CEO of Elkhart Plastics, Inc.

EPI’s Portland Plastics has taken the concept to a new level by manufacturing the GreenDrop with a proprietary material named Recycolene™. Elkhart Plastics developed special equipment and a unique in-house process to create Recycolene™, which is available in a variety of colors. Recycolene™ has superior properties when compared to currently available recycled rotational grade polyethylene and can be used to mold countless products.

The GreenDrop Recycling Station concept started with the Moda Center, formally the Rose Garden Arena, in Portland, Oregon, which was looking to become a more environmentally responsible venue as well as to increase its landfill diversion rate. The result was a unique, easy-to-use recycling station that guests can easily self-sort recyclable and compostable items. The project has been a great success and has evolved to include many venues and stadiums throughout the country, including The Staples Center in Los Angeles, the University of Washington’s Alaska Airlines Arena and the newly renovated Husky Stadium, and BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston, Texas. The Moda Center alone has increased its landfill diversion rate to 90% in 2011.

For more than 50 years, the National Association of College & University Food Services (NACUFS) has been supporting the college and university foodservice industry by providing members with the programs and resources they need to excel—from benchmarking and best practices to educational programming and professional networking.

Along with four other sustainability industry experts, Lyle Peters, senior executive for the GreenDrop Recycling, will be participating in a speakers panel addressing Sports Venues – Defining Pathways to Greater Sustainability at the Northern Experience: 2013 NACUFS National Conference.

The discussion will address the issue that no matter how good a student’s dining experience is at most college sports event or a residential hall, it often ends in a disheartening way when the diner finishes their meal and sees any packaging and leftover food get consigned to the local landfill. By contrast, professional sports teams and their venues are now successfully diverting food residuals and packaging waste streams from landfill to commercial composting, all while enhancing their guest experience and saving money. The panel will discuss the history and implementation of an effective recycling and composting program and it’s long term effects and goals.

Portland, Oregon Landfills Less Full as GreenDrop Recycling Stations Help Elephants Delicatessen Promote Sustainable Practices

May 29, 2013 | by J. Scott Collard

Portland, OR—GreenDrop Recycling and Composting Stations, from Pacific Cascade Corporation, are now helping Elephants Delicatessen to further reduce landfill contributions while increasing public awareness. Elephants understands how small efforts to reduce, reuse, and recycle can make a significant impact, benefiting community and the environment.

GreenDrop Recycling and Composting Station at Elephants Delicatessen
GreenDrop Recycling Station at the Flying Elephants Delicatessen in the Portland International Airport.

Elephants has been a leader in sustainable practices; purchasing 100% of their electricity from renewable resources, as a pioneering member of Portland Composts!, and a Metro Recycle Works participant. Elephants has made great strides in reducing their environmental footprint, and wanted to do more. Now Elephants has deployed GreenDrop Recycling and Composting Stations at their retail sites so customers can more easily help reduce landfill waste. GreenDrop Recycling Stations reduce landfill contributions by users quickly self-sorting recyclable and compostable items out of the waste stream.

“Throughout our company, employees know our Green Statement and our recycling process, but our customers don’t always know how to participate. For example, we use biodegradable and compostable packaging and service ware. Our utensils, bags, plates, coffee cups, and more can all be composted”, said Anne Weaver, CEO of Elephants.

Each GreenDrop station has four individual bins. Customized to fit the waste needs at individual locations or consistent throughout a large venue. Elephants provide customers the options of Composting, Glass Recycling, Comingled Recycling, and Trash (Landfill). Customers are guided by graphic instruction labels so they can quickly and easily sort their waste into the correct bins.

“We saw the GreenDrop Stations in use at the Rose Garden, where the Portland Trail Blazers play, and thought it was the perfect solution for our needs,” explains Elaine Rhine Tanzer, Elephants Delicatessen’s Founder.

“We currently prevent over 1000 pounds of food waste and soiled paper from entering our landfills each week, by composting all our kitchen waste. We know we can dramatically increase those numbers with the GreenDrop stations”, added Russell Spees, Director of Operations for the Flying Elephants locations. “We’ve invested extensive energy and research to be as eco-friendly as possible. 90% of food packaging at our Flying Elephants stores is fully compostable. We have salad containers that are 100% petroleum free and made from corn products. We don’t want those items filling up landfills”.

The unique, market-leading GreenDrop Recycling Station was designed through multi-year efforts of the Portland Trail Blazers head office and the Rose Quarter. Their landfill diversion rate increased from 38% in 2007 to 90% in 2011, in part by replacing old-style garbage cans with GreenDrop Recycling Stations. GreenDrop stations reduce landfill contributions by visually guiding users to properly dispose recyclable items. GreenDrops are a key tool in reducing a venue’s environmental footprint through fiscally responsible sustainable operations.

Lyle Peters, Director of Sales for GreenDrop, adds, “We have hundreds of stations deployed at several sports arenas throughout the country and now Elephants Delicatessen is the first strictly food service operation. Elephants’ dedication to the community and the environment has been an inspirational project for our Pacific Cascade team. We hope other companies follow their lead.”

GreenDrop is up in Seattle at the Green Sports Alliance Summit

September 6, 2012 | by J. Scott Collard

GreenDrop_Green_Sports_AllianceToday, we are in Seattle, WA for the annual Green Sports Alliance Summit, and it is very informative and exciting event. The agenda is packed with tours of Seattle’s most sustainable sports venues, hands-on workshops, inspiring keynotes and high-caliber networking opportunities with industry leaders.

The GreenDrop Recycling Station is also a featured element in the Ingeo Eco-Lounge hosted by NatureWorks.  The Eco-Lounge is where Third Party Experts discuss how to shift “zero waste” sports venues from an abstract concept to an everyday reality.  The expert speakers represent International Paper, Fabri-Kal, the Pittsburgh Pirates, AgRecycle, StalkMarket and the Rose Quarter, home of the Portland Trail Blazers, where they have used the GreenDrop station since 2008. The Rose Quarter went from a 38% Landfill Diversion Rate to a 90% in 2011.

The unique GreenDrop Recycling Station was designed through the efforts of the Portland Trail Blazers Head Office to reduce their environmental footprint while minimizing expenses and being fiscally responsible through sustainable operations.  Extensive research, including a university study, took place in developing the GreenDrop Stations by observing public habits and interaction to various recycling configurations.  The result was an ADA conforming, four compartment unit made of recycled plastic that allows users to send food, drinks and compostable plates, cups and utensils to a composter instead of a landfill, while separating recyclable items as well.
